Managed Healthcare Unlimited (MHU), Inc. has lost two valued colleagues: a well-respected principal of the firm and a senior consultant, both of whom touched many lives in the healthcare industry

Bernice Young had served as MHU’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for sixteen years when she passed away in September. Under her stewardship, MHU developed into a leading managed healthcare consultancy that employs experts in managed care, commercial and public sector health plan operations, compliance with state and federal regulations and quality improvement.

Ms. Young devoted her career to multiple facets of the health care industry in both the public and private sector, and at the federal and state levels. Her expertise was invaluable in setting the strategic direction of MHU and exceeding client expectations on a day-to-day basis. During her tenure at MHU, Ms. Young’s legacy included directing the development of eight definitive Technical Assistance Guides that have become the standards for routine and focused industry reviews of managed care plans that span the continuum of care, including full service medical, behavioral health and dental plans.

Prior to joining MHU, Ms. Young spent over two decades in various management capacities within the US Department of Health and Human Services overseeing HMO compliance and qualification with the Office of Managed Care; and serving as the Deputy Director for the Presidential Infant Mortality Reduction Healthy Start Initiative leading program development and implementation in 75 rural and urban communities across the country.

Ms. Young earned her Certificate in Advance Management Studies at the Yale School of Organization and Management, and pursued graduate program in Business Management at West Virginia University. She holds a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration from Tamkang University in Taiwan.

Sharon Shueman, PhD was Director, Behavioral Health and Senior Expert Consultant at MHU, a position she held since 2000. Dr. Shueman was a nationally recognized expert on autism, and the execution and evaluation of health programs that serve people with disabilities. Dr. Shueman was integrally involved in developing the Technical Assistance Guide for Routine Surveys of Behavioral Health Plans on behalf of the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC), and surveys investigating the implementation of California’s mental health parity legislation. She was an acknowledged champion at the federal and state level for tailoring and funding programs and services for special needs populations.

Both Bernice and Sharon contributed greatly to MHU’s success over the years, and our esteemed colleagues will be missed. We send our condolences to their families and to all those who knew and loved them.
